Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder often has its start in childhood. Children with OCD experience distressing levels of worrying(obsessions). In order to reduce this anxiety they may develop compulsive "rituals" or work hard to avoid things. Children rarely understand why they feel so uncomfortable in situations. They often feel different, afraid, or ashamed because they do not understand the "internal" pressure that leads to their thoughts and actions. Related disorders include Tourette's Syndrome (involuntary movements or tics) and Trichotillamania (chronic hair pulling). Learn more information and discuss this disorder in the YP.com forum!

CURRENT ISSUES WEBSITES
»» The Florida Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory OCD Screening Test
This is the OCF's electronic version of Dr. Wayne Goodman's FOCI OCD Screening Test, provided to help you self-determine if you have any clinical obsessive/compulsive tendencies. The questions below were originally designed to help health professionals evaluate anxiety symptoms. Keep in mind that a high score on this questionnaire does not necessarily mean you have an anxiety disorder because only an evaluation by a health professional can make this determination. Answer these questions as accurately and as honestly as you can.
»» What Is Life Like For Children Who Have OCD?
OCD can make daily life very difficult and stressful for children. OCD symptoms often take up a great deal of a child's time and energy, making it difficult to timely complete tasks such as homework or household chores. Children may worry that they are "crazy" because they are aware their thinking is different than that of their friends and family. A child's self-esteem can be negatively affected because the OCD has led to embarrassment time and time again, or has made the child feel "bizarre" or "out of control."
»» OCD Medication: What Parents Should Know J. Jay Fruehling, M.A.
When Should Medication Be Considered for Children With OCD? Medication treatment should only be considered when children are experiencing significant OCD-related impairment or distress, and when they have not had a satisfactory response to cognitive-behavioral therapy.
